The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that stores and produces hormones that affect the function of virtually every organ in our bodies. It regulates our metabolic rate (the way our body uses energy) and governs body weight, energy levels and the functioning of every cell. The thyroid's hormones regulate vital body functions, including: body weight, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous systems, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels, skeletal system and much more! Along with the parathyroid gland, the thyroid gland is the guardian of health and beauty. Improper balance of these two glands can make you age before your time. The skin, the complexion, and the outward appearance are affected by the thyroid.
The Thyroid gland is also associated with our Throat Chakra which relates to communication and creativity including healthy, authentic self-expression. Through the fifth chakra we enter into the realm of the miraculous and mysterious. This is where the process of manifestation begins. Being in touch with our throat chakra allows us to courageously plant seeds of creative self-expression and birth our dreams into reality. Our most important power is the spoken word, both what and how we speak.
In Kundalini yoga we recommend a minimum 40 day practise of one Kriya (exercise set) to fully reap the benefits. This is the time it takes to solidify the energetic effects and benefits from the subtle etheric realms to the grosser physical plane. This is perfect for a home practise but tricky to format as a group offering as people are often not able to commit due to time, monetary or physical constraints. I am taking advantage of today’s online technology to provide a flexible option to make it accessible for all. Your investment is $40 for the 40 day practise (just $1 a day) and you can join us live at 6.30am everyday, watch the recording at your leisure or any combination that suits you.
Yoga can be beneficial to the thyroid partly because the poses and breathing exercises induce relaxation and help to reduce stress, and stress management is highly important for thyroid health. Specific thyroid-related physical benefits can include less fatigue and muscle pain. Yoga stretches and loosens the neck area, where the thyroid gland sits and works to regulate the functioning of the gland. Some who practice yoga find that they can reduce or even eliminate their thyroid medication, but it is important to follow the guidance of your physician or the prescribing practitioner while taking thyroid medication.
Because thyroid disorders are common as we age you can receive benefits from doing thyroid-specific yoga as prevention, even if you do not have a thyroid imbalance.
